Hampden School is a rural, full primary school located within the small township of Hampden, North Otago. Hampden School, was opened in 1864 and since that time has provided educational services to the township and surrounding area.
The school is located at 41-47 Norwich Street, Hampden 9410 (32 kilometres south of Oamaru and 25 kilometres north of Palmerston).
The children attending Hampden School come from a long but narrow catchment area bounded by the sea to the east and steeply rising hills to the west. Children presently attend from Moeraki and Trotters Gorge to the south and to the north of the Hampden all the way to the settlement of Herbert.
Hampden has a diverse population. Families are employed in many different occupations with farming, fishing, tourism and mining being the main industries. Housing within Hampden is increasingly being purchased for use as holiday homes.
The school is a well maintained wooden building, remodeled in 1989 and again in 2013 – 2014.
The school is well suited to teaching and learning requirements.
Hampden School provides spacious grounds and gardens, including a heated swimming pool, adventure playground, tennis court, and large sealed areas.
A hall/gymnasium, offers the students an area to practice mini ball, gymnastics and a warm safe environment over the winter months to escape to play in.
